At the age of 24, I never thought it would happen to me. I was engaged!
I definitely did not think it would happen so soon either. After only mentioning a princess cut ring a few times in casual conversation, there he was, the man I would marry, down on one knee and looking tired after traveling over 400 miles to ask me to marry him.
You see, we managed to survive the long-distance boyfriend and girlfriend level for an entire year, and I was working on finalizing my master’s year in school, while he was working on confirming his new promotion within a great company—the dream of two young people in love and looking towards a wonderful future together.
Being a broke, young college student and living miles away from my boyfriend made my engagement story and even marriage seem like a dream. We would send text messages and emails back and forth talking about our day, but we also talked about our future. I knew that I wanted to be married, but I did not know it would be before my 25th birthday.
I’ve Been Dreaming of this Ring Since Forever
You see, our romance did not start out as your typical romance. I am, after all, not your regular “average-looking” girl. I am, however, not very fancy and do not care for all of the hoopla or grandeur involved with getting married. One thing I did know was that I wanted my princess cut ring, and I made sure everyone, especially my boyfriend, knew about it.
I knew what cut of ring I wanted since I was a young girl. I did not know the particulars of getting married and didn’t even dream of my wedding dress. I cared more about what my ring would look like and have known since the age of 10 that a princess cut ring is where it’s at! There was no doubt in my mind what kind of ring I wanted and needed, and the man or husband prototype would come later.
My Boyfriend & I Have a Fight
My boyfriend was a jokester, and often he would trick me into thinking he wasn’t coming to visit me.
I remember the day of my engagement so vividly. I was lonely and writing a master’s level term paper, meaning I was bored out of my mind! My boyfriend called me to tell me that he could not make it to visit me for the weekend. I was livid, horrified, and even extremely angry at him. I decided to focus on my important paper and not talk to him for the rest of the night, maybe even the rest of the weekend.
Sometimes, we women can get emotional and maybe a little over the top. I did not care. At the moment, I was mad. Text message after text message, I ignored. Eventually, my boyfriend called and called and called until I finally picked up hours later, asking, “What do you want? I’m working.” To which, my surprise was a sweet and enduring reply, “Open the door. I’m here.”
My Boyfriend Surprises Me
I did not believe my boyfriend because he jokes all the time. He was supposed to help me pick out a car that weekend, among other important items for my apartment, so he knew how much that weekend meant to me.
As I opened the door, there he was, down on one knee with a nice, big box, ASKING ME TO MARRY HIM!
It was the absolute best surprise ever, and I am so thankful that he listened and remembered just the type of ring I wanted. At that very moment, nothing else mattered as it was well into the night, and I was tired from writing a 50-page research paper.
We stayed up talking all night while I was looking at my ring, calling immediate family and friends, and pre-planning the rest of our lives together. It’s funny that I remember my engagement story so well because it is attached to some intense emotions ranging from anger to confusion and ultimately to full-out happiness!
