With Calgary’s great location and natural wonders, it won’t be hard to have an amazing time here. In fact, you can try out various outdoor activities here all year long. Don’t believe us? We’ve listed down some of the most exciting things to do in and around the city to help you better appreciate your new home.
Go River Rafting
Want to spend a fun but relaxing day outside without leaving the city? You can go river rafting on the Bow River or the Elbow River. There are quite a few companies that offer such services in the city, so it wouldn’t be too complicated to do. All you really need to do is to rent a raft, pick a starting point, and enjoy hours of taking in Calgary’s beautiful waterfront scenery while floating down in the water.
This is a popular summer activity and will let you take your entire family. If you choose to take the Bow River, expect the activity to last for three to four hours. If you’re a novice and want something less daunting, you can also opt to float down the Elbow River. This will only take two hours.
Visit the WinSport Complex
If you’re looking for extreme sports, the WinSport complex is an excellent destination. Also known as the Canada Olympic Park, this venue was created for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Thanks to the continued support of the general public and the government, it didn’t fall into disuse and is now one of the most exciting year-round attractions in Calgary.
As it is built for winter sporting activities, you can definitely have a great time here in the colder months. You can snowboard here without leaving the city. There’s also a ski jumping facility here, so you don’t have to drive out to the mountains if you want to spend some time in the ice.
In the summer, you can zipline, skydive, go bobsledding, ice skate, play mini golf, or use some of their numerous mountain biking trails among other fun activities. There are tons of things to do here, so you definitely won’t run out of options for a fun day outside.
Banff National Park
If you’re willing to drive out a bit to have some outdoor fun, the Banff National Park is only about 90 minutes away from downtown Calgary. Located right in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, it features a good dose of picture-perfect mountain views and several national historic sites.
Offering 1,641,027 acres of space, there are tons of things that you can do in this park. The gondola ride is a must, as it will let you take in the marvellous sights around you. Seeing the historic hot spring is also an absolute must but you don’t need to bring swimwear. Taking a dip is prohibited there due to the invasive bacterium that is present in the water.
You can also go skiing in the winter or explore the caves and go hiking in the summer. Experts recommend visiting the site in the fall, though, so you can see the larch trees turn yellow.
Glacier Adventure
Another unique adventure that you can enjoy in Calgary is the glacier walk and skywalk. It will take about three hours to get to the Columbia ice fields but you’ll find it worth the drive since not a lot of people get to walk on a glacier.
To make the trip more exciting, you can also experience the skywalk. This one might not sound all too exciting on paper, but walking on a glass walkway hanging from a cliff would prove to be a thrilling affair once you’re there. It also doesn’t hurt that the views are breathtaking the entire time.
These outdoor activities are just a few of the many things you can enjoy if you choose to live in Calgary. There are tons more that you’ll surely fall in love with once you’re here.
