Long-distance relationships have a terrible reputation, and if you are thinking about entering into one you may find yourself getting discouraged by friends and family who fear that you will only end up with a broken heart.
Sure, there are obstacles that you will need to navigate, but it is possible to be successfully involved in a romantic connection with someone who is not physically near you, for whatever reason. And with the challenges, you will find many benefits, too!
The simplest things become incredibly sweet and you will savour little actions like holding your partner’s hand, eating at the same table together, swapping small gifts, or just taking a walk. As tough as they are, long-distance relationships have their own advantages.
Avoid Over-Communicating
Many people feel that they need to compensate for the distance by doing that much more, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It may actually make things worse since it can prove to be pretty exhausting!
Try to remember that less is more, and spamming should never be an issue. Try instead to tease at the right moments and tug at the right spots and enjoy each other when you are together and being alone when you’re apart.
Do Things as a Couple
Just because you aren’t in the same place as each other doesn’t mean you can’t spend meaningful time with one another! The internet has made it easier than ever to do things with someone on the other side of the world, and you’ve got lots of options.
You could play an online game together, spend time at sports betting sites in NZ and wager on the same game, event, or tournament as each other, or even just watch a documentary at the same time. You could take walks while you video call, showing each other your neighbourhoods and where you like to go and enjoy a relaxed chat via the same, over a nice meal and a bottle of wine.
Give each other lists of books to read, exchange favourite television shows, music, and movies and you’ll have that much more to do in your spare time and interesting things to talk about when you connect.
Set Ground Rules
Both you and your partner need to be 100% clear about what you expect from each other for the length of your long-distance relationship.
You’ll need to hash out whether or not you two are exclusive, for example, or if you’re both going on dates with other people. Establishing a commitment level in the beginning is the best way to avoid failing to meet each other’s expectations and ending up getting hurt as a result.
View It is an Opportunity Instead of a Curse
Changing your perspective can do you the world of good and may save the relationship until you’re able to live nearer one another. If you believe that your bond will deepen through this experience and strive to make it so, you’ll find that your connection will be strengthened and you’ll be a lot happier, too.
