Five Essential Care Tips for Your Personal Jewelry

June 15, 2019 //  by Anna//  Leave a Comment

Every gold and silver accessory is precious and needs extra care. To ensure that your personalized jewelry will remain looking lustrous and new, here are a couple of simple instructions to remember. Regardless of if your jewelry is made of solid gold, silver, brass, or stainless steel, it is best that you provide each piece with the necessary care that it deserves. Some jewelry comes with special instructions that you need follow to ensure that your precious monogram or antique accessory remains looking like it is brand new even if you purchased it a long time ago.

  1. Make sure to apply your makeup first before wearing accessories

Cosmetic products like body lotions, hair care products, and makeup contain strong chemicals that cause your precious jewelry to tarnish. To ensure that your customized jewelry piece remains in its best condition, make sure to wear it after you are done applying your makeup and fixing your hair.

  1. If you’re cleaning, remove it

Some pieces of jewelry like silver and stainless steel are prone to tarnish especially if you are acidic. The combination of your sweat and the metal will cause it to tarnish, therefore making it more difficult to clean. If you are about to clean the house, it is best to remove all accessories from your body, even your watch.

  1. Keep your jewelry away from swimming pools

If you are planning to go and swim in the pool on a hot summer day make sure to remove all pieces of jewelry because the water has high chlorine content, which can cause your jewelry to experience discoloration if exposed for an extended period. So, it is better to play safe by removing your jewelry.

  1. Do not wear any jewelry while taking a bath

Many people have the habit of not removing some of their favorite jewelry like their earrings and wedding bands. However, you have to remember that certain bath products like shampoos, conditioner, and body soap can affect the quality of your jewelry in the long run. These products can make you smell fresh and look clean, but they can cause your favorite accessories to lose their shine and luster.

  1. Make sure that you keep your expensive jewelry in a safe place

If you want your jewelry to look new, then you should invest in the right storage boxes to keep it away from dust, dirt, and weather changes. There are special jewelry boxes that are meant for each type of jewelry to ensure that they do not end up entangled with each other, causing breakage. Choose a jewelry box with soft velvet or silk lining. You can also buy strips that can protect your accessories from fading and tarnishing in the long run.

Lastly, accessories made from sterling silver deserve special care. It is best to use silver polish to keep them looking like brand new. Most jewelry stores sell high-quality silver cleaner, so you will not have a hard time finding it.
