Things I Like in Books 31

Awful drawings of things I like in books

NOTE: I am ridiculous and started a list called “Things I Like in Books.” These are drawings of the things on that list. Truly AWFUL drawings. I am now going to share them with you one at a time. Okay, here we go.

I like it when books are set in boarding schools

Examples: Um, every good book ever: Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart…I could really go on and on. Why are they so good? Because there are no parents around, duh. That’s YA gold. It normally bothers me in regular YA when parents aren’t around, but in boarding school books, it’s totally addressed so I give it a pass.

Boarding School

What are your favorite boarding school books?

PS: I am fully aware that my drawings are getting worse over time. I should be embarrassed, but, alas, I am not.

Things I Like in Books 30

Awful drawings of things I like in books

NOTE: I am ridiculous and started a list called “Things I Like in Books.” These are drawings of the things on that list. Truly AWFUL drawings. I am now going to share them with you one at a time. Mostly on Saturdays. Okay, here we go.

I like it when the characters go to PROM!

Examples: Prom & Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg, of course. And then I love how in the Paranormalcy books by Kiersten White the main character is obsessed with prom. This prom book, Ask Again Later comes out in March and looks super cute too!

I like it whenever royalty is involved.

Examples: The Princess Diaries, The Selection, Throne of Glass, basically any fantasy book ever…okay, sure, I’ve said I liked castles as a setting, but I really like any type of royalty. There are so many class dynamics, poisonings and pretty dresses involved!

I like it when there’s a prophecy.

Examples: It’s a minor part of the story in the Vampire Academy books and even in Perfect Fifths, the final Jessica Darling book. It was a big part of The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas. It’s been awhile, but if I’m remembering correctly it was in The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson and Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey. Can you think of any others?

I like it when characters go to the dressmaker.

Examples: Okay, this is mostly in ye olden timey books — but to me, trips to the dressmaker are the bookish equivalent to the movie montage where a girl gets a makeover.

Now, of course, I’m sort of blanking on examples. But I know it happened to Tessa in Cassie Clare’s Clockwork Angel. And even Katniss has one when she meets with Cinna in The Hunger Games. Of course, there’s always Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Grimaldi Renaldo Crown Princess of Genovia’s makeover. Help me think of others! Also, this picture is a hot mess. Sorry.
