Things I Like in Books 8

Awful drawings of things I like in books

NOTE: I am ridiculous and started a list called “Things I Like in Books.” These are drawings of the things on that list. Truly AWFUL drawings. I am now going to share them with you one at a time. Mostly on Saturdays. Okay, here we go.

I like it when technology doesn’t enter into the picture.

It just ruins all the fun for me when main characters are texting, IMing and emailing constantly. I get that that’s the reality of teen life these days, but it feels like it detracts from some of the tension.

AGREE AGREE AGREE. Also hate when they bring up Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, CRINGE. Let’s just communicate the old fashioned way, please.

I agree! I also think it outdates the story and I don’t like that.

Such a great point, I recently read the original editions of Vampire Diaries which were published in 1991 and I loved how without cell phones the book has so much more lead up to important events.

I definitely agree with this! Texting – and text language – always puts me off, even though it’s completely normal now in real life. For some reason I want my book worlds to be timeless and reliant on face to face meeting!

AMEN!!! I think it really doesn’t do any favors for a book. In 20 years all of that stuff is going to be out of date and they’ll just sound kind of stupid. IMO.

Along the same lines, I hate when books name drop like iPhone and Facebook. Um…really? Why is that necessary.

Sorry, to rant, but you hit on something that’s a soapbox for me.

Ooh, I never thought of that, but I totally think it’s true! It’s much more fun when technology doesn’t take over everything.

I so agree with you. Even though I know I text a lot… I’d rather face to face conversation or something else to fill up my pages. Sometimes I get nervous when there is TOO much technology because I wonder how timely the book will be… which I guess is kind of silly since the world is being taken over my computers. (Have you read Awaken? haha) But great point! And I love your drawings! Can I frame some for my wall? haha

I totally agree with you girl! I love when stories are stripped from technology. I really don’t want to read about people watching TV, using their phone or computer. That’s boring. We do that everyday.

I agree, though I’ve only been faced with stories featuring too much technology a couple of times. Each time I have it’s been very annoying! I will say that when I was in middle school I loved Lauren Myracles ‘iming’ books a lot, I think books heavily laced with technology are probably best for the younger kids.

DEFINITELY agree! It bugs me so much when character text ALL the time and then don’t spell their words out all the way… And I LOVE your drawing. (:
