Since her parents’ bitter divorce, McLean and her dad, a restaurant consultant, have been on the move-four towns in two years. Estranged from her mother and her mother’s new family, McLean has followed her dad in leaving the unhappy past behind. And each new place gives her a chance to try out a new persona: from cheerleader to drama diva. But now, for the first time, McLean discovers a desire to stay in one place and just be herself, whoever that is. Perhaps Dave, the guy next door, can help her find out.
Combing Sarah Dessen’s trademark graceful writing, great characters, and compelling storytelling, What Happened to Goodbye is irresistible reading.

I love Sarah Dessen. I mean, how can you not? She’s one of the most consistent and impressive YA authors out there. Anytime I want a modern romance with a serious side, I turn to Sarah, and I know she’ll deliver.
As always, she delivered with What Happened to Goodbye. I mean, I know it sounds like I’m calling her predictable, but I mean that as an absolute compliment. As a reader, when I’m in the mood for a certain type of book, it’s such a relief knowing just where to turn. Contemporary romance is by far my favorite YA genre, and I love that I know whose writing I can count on.
That being said, I’ll admit What Happened to Goodbye wasn’t my favorite Sarah Dessen book. I think it had something to do with the timeline — every now and then there’d be a reference to some weeks having passed and I had to do a double-take. Also, the book was a little less about romance and more about family issues. And you know I crave the romance!
Still, I’d definitely recommended What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen for those looking for a good contemp fix.
