Since her parents’ bitter divorce, McLean and her dad, a restaurant consultant, have been on the move-four towns in two years. Estranged from her mother and her mother’s new family, McLean has followed her dad in leaving the unhappy past behind. And each new place gives her a chance to try out a new persona: from cheerleader to drama diva. But now, for the first time, McLean discovers a desire to stay in one place and just be herself, whoever that is. Perhaps Dave, the guy next door, can help her find out.

Combing Sarah Dessen’s trademark graceful writing, great characters, and compelling storytelling, What Happened to Goodbye is irresistible reading.

— Amazon.com description

I love Sarah Dessen. I mean, how can you not? She’s one of the most consistent and impressive YA authors out there. Anytime I want a modern romance with a serious side, I turn to Sarah, and I know she’ll deliver.

As always, she delivered with What Happened to Goodbye. I mean, I know it sounds like I’m calling her predictable, but I mean that as an absolute compliment. As a reader, when I’m in the mood for a certain type of book, it’s such a relief knowing just where to turn. Contemporary romance is by far my favorite YA genre, and I love that I know whose writing I can count on.

That being said, I’ll admit What Happened to Goodbye wasn’t my favorite Sarah Dessen book. I think it had something to do with the timeline — every now and then there’d be a reference to some weeks having passed and I had to do a double-take. Also, the book was a little less about romance and more about family issues. And you know I crave the romance!

Still, I’d definitely recommended What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen for those looking for a good contemp fix.

I’ve read one Sarah Dessen book before and it was Just Listen, but I didn’t enjoy it, it wasn’t right for me. I’ve heard beyond AMAZING things about the author though and love me some romance,! Maybe you could suggest a title? 🙂 Great review Anna! 🙂

You can’t lose with Sarah Dessen! This wasn’t one of my favs either though. I had just finished Along for the Ride and I think I was really just wishing for some more of Auden 🙂 Do you follow literarywife on Twitter? She was just asking for SD recs this morning!

When I read the title of the book you were reviewing, I thought “she’s going to say this one didn’t have enough romance.” Still, a great read, but you are right — really more about family than romance.

I really need to read a Dessen book! I can’t believe I’ve never read anything by her before. I don’t think I’ll start with this one since you say it’s not all about the romance, but I’ll definitely read one soon :]

Great review! I feel the same way. I love Sarah Dessen and will read anything she writes, but I wished this book had more romance. I agree with Katie. Along for the ride was one of her more romantic ones.

I think most people felt that way about this book. I know I did. There are better Dessen books, but this one was still good.

I don’t think anything can top Truth About Forever, Along for the Ride, and This Lullaby. Three of my favorites of hers, but What Happened to Goodbye is a nice addition to my likables list. It was a fun story!

And isn’t that good for an author to have a little predictability to them? I mean, we love them for a reason, and if that reason keeps reappearing in all subsequent books, then it’s not bad. I think you said it perfectly!

I liked this one, too, but mostly I really liked Dave. I wanted to get to know him a bit better. I wanted more from him… and yes, more romance!
