Forever by Maggie Stiefvater Review

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls, Book 3)
By Maggie Stiefvater
July 12, 2011
Scholastic Press, 400 pages

The thrilling conclusion to #1 bestselling Shiver trilogy from Maggie Stievater.

In Maggie Stiefvater’s SHIVER, Grace and Sam found each other. In LINGER, they fought to be together. Now, in FOREVER, the stakes are even higher than before. Wolves are being hunted. Lives are being threatened. And love is harder and harder to hold on to as death comes closing in.

— Amazon.com description

I don’t say this lightly: Maggie Stiefvater’s Wolves of Mercy Falls series is a must-read for anyone interested in young adult literature.

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first: Yes, these books are about werewolves. But I urge anyone who is paranormal-phobic to give them a go anyway. The writing is so strong and the story so BIG that to dismiss them as “werewolf books” would be a disservice.*

They are about so much more than that — love and fear and kindness and first love and abandonment and hope and…oh lord, stop me because I’m getting all weepy about Sam and Grace now.

I was swept away in these books from beginning to end. Maybe a little too much — my friend Jamie had to alert me to the fact that I was holding my hand over my heart while reading Forever.  Also, I finished the book on a plane ride and was a bit of a sobby mess. And I may or may not have hugged the book when I got my greedy little paws on it.

Yeah…drama queen alert! But it’s because all three books are heartbreaking and gorgeous and sad and poetic and just SO BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN THAT I FEEL I HAVE TO SCREAM IT AT YOU so that you understand how good they are.

For those who have read the first two books: I won’t spoil you, but know this: There were tears in the end, but I really feel Maggie gave us the perfect ending. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now, off with you all. Go order them. Shoo…

*Not that there’s anything wrong with werewolf books. I’m just saying — a lot of people are prejudiced and would look right over them.

Thank you to Scholastic for a) introducing me to Maggie (EEK!) and b) for my advanced copy of this book.

Oh, oh, I want it so badly… I remember when I first got my hands on Linger and hugged it, and I'm pretty sure I carried Shiver around all day when I got it, and even after I finished it. *sigh* It's going to be sad, but they deserve an ending.

As a fan of books primarily about "real people stuff", I am SO glad you convinced me to read these books. I just started Forever (thanks to the awesomeness of you getting it for me!) and I can't wait to finish it.

I need to give this series a shot. Do you think this is a case where it's better to buy the actual books, rather than the ebook version? I've heard some people say that the books themselves are gorgeous.

@Stephanie McNemar Stephanie, these books are definitely a tactile experience. The covers are gorgeous, and the type is color-toned to match them. I think you'll like the actual book version best!
